Forthcoming Events

Ongar Open Day

There will be an open day at the Epping-Ongar Railway on Sunday 5th October. All members of CHTL, ORPS and Holden F5 Trust are invited to view progress and talk to the volunteers on the line.

Meet at Ongar Station at 10:45 for 11:00. Some parking available at the station, 2 large car parks off the High Street only a couple of minutes' walk away. Please note we think that both these car parks are 'pay & display' even on a Sunday - bring some change!

End of Year Social Evening

A social evening has been arranged for Thursday 20th November at North Weald Village Hall, starting at 8pm. Hosted by ORPS, members of CHTL, Holden F5 Steam Locomotive Trust and EOVRS are also invited to attend. Come and hear the latest news about the Epping-Ongar Railway, heritage trains on the Underground and progress with the construction of the F5. Bar and seasonal fare available.

News Update Spring 2008

We are pleased to annouce that we have now raised the funds required for essential welding and other repair work on the Cravens unit. This is a tremendous achievement and we would like to thank all those who generously donated to the fund. We will soon be arranging a date for the work to be carried out.

We appreciate that many enthusiasts have been waiting for a chance to travel on our train and would like to thank everyone for their support in the past and their continuing patience. Further news will be posted here as soon as it is available.

News Update Spring 2007

Enthusiasts may have noticed that Cravens Heritage Trains have been rather quiet since the East London Explorer railtour on 18 May 2003. However we are still very much in business but the last few years have presented some particular challenges for us.

Firstly, with the introduction of PPP, there was uncertainty concerning the future use of a privately owned unit on the Underground system especially with the late cancellation of the Heathrow and Northern Heights railtour planned for October 2004. This concern has, we feel, now been overcome and we are delighted that the 1938TS unit owned by the Museum will be helping to celebrate the Golders Green Open Day in July.

Prior to the Cravens-built 1960TS unit venturing out on to the system again we need to undertake some substantial repairs. During its last periodic examination it was discovered that there was a crack in the underframe of one of the DMs. To get this damage repaired and to carry out other essential works we need to raise in the region of £20,000 (including VAT).

Approaching three-quarters of the amount has been pledged or donated so far by our members but if other rail enthusisasts feel that they would like to help get the Cravens unit back into service and running railtours again donations will be gratefully received. Please send cheques (made payable to Cravens Heritage Trains Limited) to Garry Thorp at 'Bachelors', Broad Street, Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex CM22 7JD and monies will be ring fenced purely for this work.

With the help of members and enthusiasts scenes like this will be possible once more - The Cravens unit at Uxbridge in 2003.
